Smith and Wesson have created a spring assist knife that blurs the boundaries between assist and automatic. It's incredibly easy to open and the assist mechanism is nearly flawless, offering all of the benefits of an automatic knife. The blade is deployed by either the thumb stud (spring assist) or you can pull a lever on the spine of the spine of the knife which gives the blade a push and the the rest of the opening is automatic.
